Tanjib-ul Alam
Mr. Alam is regarded as one of the leading corporate law experts in Bangladesh. He has unparalleled experience in banking, syndication, telecommunication, project financing, securitization, listing of public companies in stock exchanges, and advising foreign investors on regulatory issues in various sectors including but not limited to energy and telecommunication sector of Bangladesh. As a lawyer, he also has an impeccable understanding of constitutional law. He frequently sits as an arbitrator in both domestic and international arbitrations.
Mr. Tanjib-ul Alam was appointed as the Lead Consultant by International Finance Corporation ("IFC") for drafting a new Companies Act for Bangladesh. In addition, he was involved in drafting the Bangladesh Telecommunication Act, 2001; Information and Communication Technology Act, 2006 as well as the proposed Broadcasting Act of Bangladesh. Mr. Alam was also involved in the drafting of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission Act. This goes on to demonstrate the splendor of his advocacy experience and analytical skills.
He played a key role in developing a number of products and solutions for mobile operators in Bangladesh and has been a part of numerous substantial telecom deals. Mr. Alam has also acted as a counsel representing Grameenphone Ltd. in the acquisition of GPIT by Accenture. He was the lead counsel for the merger of Robi Axiata Limited and Airtel Bangladesh Limited, the top two mobile phone operators of the country, which resulted in the largest merger in the history of Bangladesh. Mr. Alam also acted as the lead local counsel for bKash Limited, a mobile financial company; for acquisition of shares in bKash by IFC, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Alipay and recently, Softbank.
Mr. Alam is a renowned legal consultant in Bangladesh, and has been involved in various projects funded by the World Bank. He was the lead Corporatization Specialist and Consultant of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in the Public Procurement Reform Project funded by the World Bank.
Mr. Alam is also the lead counsel for the team of Tanjib Alam and Associates that is advising the premier bourse in Bangladesh, Dhaka Stock Exchange Ltd., in off-loading its share to Strategic Investor as per the Exchanges Demutualization Act, 2013. Mr. Alam is a Senior Advocate and appears before various benches of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of Bangladesh in both Appellate Division and the High Court Division, representing a wide range of clients on various issues including commercial litigations, judicial review petitions, company law matters, admiralty case, fiscal matters (income tax, VAT and Customs), etc. Mr. Alam is a leader in the power and telecommunication sector.
Barrister Tanjib was called to the Bar of England and Wales from the Hon’ble Society of Lincoln’s Inn in 1997. He has been practicing in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh since 2005.
